1. World Water Day 2019
@ Plant Genetic Resources Centre (PGRC), Gannoruwa, Peradeniya
A half a dayprogramme for 11 government schools children in Kandy district was held at the Plant Genetic Resources Centre (PGRC), Gannoruwa, Peradeniya to mark the World Water Day 2019.
More than 100 participants including 87 advanced level school children and 09 teachers participated the programme. Mr. C.K. Wickramathunga, Assistant Director of Agriculture, Department of Agriculture, Mr. A.L.M. Sharudeen, Additional Provincial Director of Education, Kandy, and Prof. E.R.N. Gunawardena, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya served as resource persons. Ms.GimhaniPabodha, an IWRM masters student of the Postgraduate Institute of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya made a demonstration of Aqua Republica (watershed management game) to the school children. Prof. C.M.B. Dematawewa, Director, Postgraduate Institute of Agriculture and Dr. R.S.K. Keerthisena, Additional Director General (Research), Department of Agriculturealso addressed the gathering. The programme was coordinated by. Dr. S. Pathmarajah, Country Coordinator, Cap-Net Lanka.
2. Workshop on Technological and Cropping Options to Mitigate Impacts of Climate Change
Date: 18th March 2019 at theDistrict Agriculture Training Centre, Jaffna and
19th March 2019 at the District Agriculture Training Centre, Kilinochchi
Two programmes on “Technological and Cropping Options to Mitigate Impacts of Climate Change” was conducted in two northern districts was organized by Sri Lanka Water Partnership (SLWP) and Cap-Net Lanka on the 18th March 2019 at the District Agriculture Training Centre, Jaffna and 19th March 2019 at the District Agriculture Training Centre, Kilinochchi.
Mrs. Kailesvaran, District Director ofAgriciculture, Jaffna, Mr. A. Selvarajah District Director of Agriculture,Killinochchi, Dr. M.S.Nijamudeen, Principal Scientist, Department of Agriculture and Mr. S Shanmuhananthan,Deputy Chief Secretary, Northern Provincial Council served at Resource Persons.Mr. Vethanahayan, District Secretory, Jaffna also addressed the audience.
Around 65 participants including officers and farmer representatives participated in each Programme.
3. Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) programme for field staff of Irrigation Department (ID)
Date: 13th June 2019 @ Sanol Reception Hall, Attanagalla Road, Nittambuwa (Gampaha District)
A one-day dayprogramme for 61government officers i.e. Engineering Assistants, Development officers, Work Supervisors, Senior Anicut gate keepers were held in Sanol Reception Hall, Attanagalla Road, Nittambuwa (Gampaha District) on 13th June 2019.
Resource Persons were Mr.SarathPremalal| Former Director General of Meteorology, Mr.UpulMendis| Former Additional Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Director Agriculture Western Province, Eng. JanakiMeegastenne| Former Director of Irrigation Department and Additional Project Director CRIP and Mr. UG Abeygunawardene| Consultant SLWP., Eng. PriyaniJayaweera | Director of Irrigation Department, Colombo Region also participated. Mr.RanjithRathnayake|Country Coordinator represented SLWP and the programme was organized by Mr. SCCD Suraweera| Director, Irrigation Department Gampaha.
4. Workshop on Emergence of a Toxic Algal Bloom in Rajangana Reservoir in the Kala Oya Basin
Date: 20th June 2019 at National Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture Training Institute (NIFATI), Vijithapura, Kalawewa
One-Day workshop was held on 20th June 2019 at National Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture Training Institute (NIFATI), Vijithapura, Kalawewa for Irrigation Engineers, Agriculture Officers, Water Managers, Aquaculturists, Environmental Officers, Livestock Managers etc.
Dr. S. Pathmarajah, Country Coordinator, Cap-Net Lanka and Dr. (Ms.)IndikaGunawardena, Capacity Development Analyst | Cap-Net UNDP participated for the programme sponsored by the South Asia Environmental Capacity Building _ Environmental and Water Pollution Project (EWPP) conducted by Water Resources Science and Technology (WRST).
5. Symposium on “Urban Water and Coastal Zone Management
Date: 28 November 2019 at International Water management Institute (IWMI), Colombo, Sri Lanka.
To align with UNDP’s “Water and Ocean Governance Programme”, the above symposium
was organized by Cap-Net Lanka in collaboration with the Postgraduate Institute of
Agriculture (PGIA), Water Resources Science and Technology (WRST) and Lanka Jalani
(Sri Lanka Water Partnership) on the 28 th November 2019 at the International Water
management Institute (IWMI), Colombo, Sri Lanka. The event was attended by more than
50 participants from relevant institutions. Dr. S. Pathmarajah, Country Manager, Cap-Net
Lanka coordinated the event.
Mr. Lim Chow Hoc, Manager, MyCDNet, Malaysia delivered a guest speech on Coastal Reservoirs which was well received by the audience. Dr. Terni Pradeep Kumara, General Manager, Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) delivered a key note speech on “Marine Pollution” and Mr. Gamini Hewage, Director, Coastal Resource Management of the Cost Conservation Department (CCD) made an invited presentation on “Coastal Water Pollution and Management Interventions”. A panel discussion on Issues and Essence of Urban Water and Coastal Zone Management was held with the participation of managerial level officials from Government and Non-governmental organizations. Altogether, six invited presentations were made in the Technical Sessions in the afternoon.
Winners of the Aqua Republica – 2019; St. Sylvester's College, Kandy and Rambewa Central College, Anuradhapura were awarded Trophies and Certificates at this event. Students of Rambewa Central College have obtained a score of 246,858 which was the highest score achieved since the competition was introduced in Sri Lanka by Cap-Net Lanka in 2016.
The symposium clearly recognised that policies and plans to protect the urban waters and coastal zones are already available; what is lacking is action which require political will and financial assistance.
6. MELP of the ToT (WASH) Programme for Local Animators – Participants’ Reflection
Date: 24 October 2019 at Green Hill Hotel, Hatton, Sri Lanka.
A half-day programme to evaluate the outcomes of the training programme on Training of Trainers for implementation of HygieneEducation and Promotion at rural levelwas organized by Cap-Net Lanka in collaboration with World Vision Lanka (WVL). The programme was held on the 24 October 2019 in Green Hill Hotel, Hatton. A total of 24 including 10 females participated. The programme was based on both written feedback and discussions on opportunities and constraints for knowledge sharing. Dr. S. Pathmarajah, Country Coordinator, Cap-Net Lanka coordinated the programme.
7. Hands on training on Aqua Republica
Date: 30 October 2019 and 8 November 2019 at Anuradhapura and Kandy, Sri Lanka.
Hands-on trainings for School children and teachers were held in Anuradhapura and Kandy Districts on 30th October and 08th November 2019, respectively. IWRM students of the Postgraduate Institute of Agriculture served as resource persons. A total of 50 school children including 13 females and 10 teachers were trained.
8. Capacity Building of the Leaders of Community Based Water Societies in Badulla and NuwaraEliya districts
Date: 23 and 30 November 2019 at Badulla and NuwaraEliya districts, Sri Lanka.
Above two programmes were organized in collaboration with Cap-Net Lanka and WASO Project of the University of Jaffnafor the Leaders of the Community Based Water Societies. Programmes were conducted on 23 and 30 November 2019 in Badulla and NuwaraEliya Districts, respectively. Altogether 89 participants (48 males and 41 females) attended the Badulla Programme and 75 participants (37 males and 38 females) attended the NuwaraEliyaprogramme. Four Persons from the areas of Engineering, Human Resources andIWRM served as resource persons.
9. Watershed Management for Hill Country in Sri Lanka
Date: 25 and 26 November 2019 at Sathyodaya Educational Training Centre, Kandy, Sri Lanka.
Two-day residential workshop on Watershed Management for Hill Country in Sri Lanka was organized by Cap-Net Lanka in collaboration with World Vision Lanka on 25 and 26 November 2019 at Sathyodaya Educational Training Centre, Kandy. A total of 25participants including 20 females participated the programme.
10. Cap-Net Lanka – PGIA Junior Water Awards for Innovations and Knowledge Management (Aqua Republica) 2019
Date: 28 October 2019 at International Water Management Institute (IWMI), Colombo, Sri Lanka.
